Review of Work Placement Week – Dan Miller

I was very grateful to be accepted for a week’s placement at Avadis & Co. as it is extremely hard to find work experience as an aspiring lawyer. Every member of staff made me feel welcome and instantly part of the team, upon arrival and throughout the week.

Having never previously experienced Family or Child law before, this week has been a highly formative experience in my career to date. This is due to the firm’s principle that regardless of prior experience, each person on work placement is trusted to carry out work that is pertinent to current cases, and is helped along by the more experienced members of the office. This way, you are granted the chance to rapidly acclimatise to the standard demanded, with the offer of help or guidance from others always present. The open plan office creates the perfect environment for interaction with almost every member of the office.

The work placement programme is run expertly by Jamie Byrne, who immediately makes you feel welcome and a key part of the team at Avadis. He always ensured I had work to do that was never trivial or unchallenging, and was always on-hand for guidance when necessary.

The work placement at Avadis was certainly challenging at times but it was thoroughly enjoyable and I feel that I’ve gained comprehensive experience in family and child law – especially when analysing large amounts of information relating to a range of cases.

The nature of the law that the firm practices meant that the work I was given during the week varied considerably from case to case. I feel that this was a fantastic preparation for my future career in law as it allowed me to independently deal with legal challenges that required a wide range of knowledge and fast researching skills.
